FSU vs. SMU will kick off at 9:15 after being delayed due to power outage

Florida State’s ACC opener vs. No. 19 SMU was set for 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday, but won’t kick off until 9:15 p.m. ET on ESPN tonight.

A transformer reportedly blew on the west side of the stadium, shutting off lights as well as power in the press box.

The game was minutes from kicking off before a power surge delayed the matchup for what at first was supposed to be a few minutes, eventually evolving into a nearly two-hour long process as stadium officials tried multiple solutions to get Doak Campbell Stadium in working order. Both teams, which had run out on the field and were waiting on the sidelines for kick, were forced to return to the locker room.

While there is sufficient light for the game to now be played, there will be several missing features from the game including no coach-to-player communication on headsets, no tablets on the sideline, no PA system, and no scoreboard.

  • Florida State will begin ACC play with a Labor Day game against SMU on September 7 at 7:30 PM on ESPN. The teams have met just once before, in SMU’s inaugural ACC season in 2024. This is the first matchup in Doak Campbell Stadium.
  • The Seminoles enter the contest 1-0 after a season-opening victory over New Mexico State on August 29. Quarterback Ashton Daniels accounted for 232 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Samuel Singleton Jr. was named ACC Receiver of the Week with 164 all-purpose yards and two total touchdowns.
  • Quindarrius Jones earned his first career interception on the opening drive of the 2026 season. It was the first time since 2020 and just the sixth time since 1980 that FSU began a season with a takeaway on the opponent’s opening drive.
  • FSU answered with a 43-yard field goal, the sixth time in seven seasons under Mike Norvell that FSU has scored on its first drive of a season. FSU has started a season with points in five consecutive seasons, tied for the 2nd-longest active streak entering Week 1. The Noles’ 38 points on opening drives since 2020 are the most in the country.
  • Florida State is led by preseason All-American wide receiver Duce Robinson. The FSU legacy led the ACC last regular season with 1,081 receiving yards, the most for a Seminole since 2019. A first-team All-ACC selection and third-team All-American in 2025, Robinson ranked 11th nationally in receiving yards, led all P4 receivers with five 120-yard receiving games and was 2nd in the ACC with 21.15 yards per reception, behind only teammate Micahi Danzy.
  • Robinson enters the year on the Maxwell Award, Biletnikoff Award, Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and Wuerffel Trophy watch lists, is FSU’s nominee for the Good Works Team and is a preseason first team All-American by multiple outlets. In 2025, Robinson was a first-team Academic All-American, the first at Florida State since 2012. The social studies major graduated in summer 2026.
  • In his first season as a wide receiver, Danzy led the country with six 50-yard plays in 2025. He joined 2026 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Peter Warrick as the only FSU wide receivers with at least three rushing and three receiving touchdowns in a season.
  • Kicker Gabe Panikowski converted both field goal attempts vs. New Mexico State. For his career, the 5th Year is a perfect 17-for-17 on field goals at the NCAA level. He was the Fred Haskins Award winner as the best non-FBS kicker in 2024 when he made all 15 field goal attempts at Idaho State. He did not appear in a game last season for Oklahoma State.
  • Florida State’s 109-player roster includes 62 newcomers – 35 freshmen, 23 four-year transfers and 4 JuCo transfers. Of that group, 26 players saw their first action as Seminoles against New Mexico State, including 10 starters. Safety Ma’Khi Jones earned his first career start against the Aggies.

Gauteng expands free Wi‑Fi, digital skills and smart safety

Gauteng is fast‑tracking its digital revolution, with the Department of e‑Government reporting strides in expanding connectivity, rolling out new e‑services, and using technology to build safer, smarter communities.

Presenting the department’s 2025/26 Annual Report in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, MEC for e-Government Bonginkosi Dhlamini said Gauteng continues to make steady progress towards becoming a smart, digitally connected and inclusive province.

‘Connecting people’

Dhlamini said technology is changing lives across Gauteng.

“We are connecting people to opportunities, making government services easier to access and equipping residents with the digital skills they need to succeed in the modern economy,” said Dhlamini.

Public Wi-Fi

According to the department, over the past year it has rolled out 96 public Wi-Fi hotspots at schools, libraries, hospitals, clinics, hostels, and driving licence testing centres, giving residents access to up to 500 MB of free internet daily.

Dhlamini said the Gauteng Provincial Network also continued to expand, connecting more government facilities and maintaining a 99% network uptime, helping ensure uninterrupted access to digital services.

“Reliable broadband creates smarter schools, strengthens healthcare services and enables more responsive government institutions. It opens doors to education, business opportunities and economic growth while ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital age,” said MEC Dhlamini.

Digital skills

The department’s spokesperson, Sithembiso Ndlovu, said building a digitally capable Gauteng “remains a key priority.”

During the reporting period, 6,461 government employees received digital skills training, while 14 085 young people participated in ICT and technology skills programmes designed to prepare them for future careers.

Crime prevention

According to Dhlamini, technology is also playing an increasingly important role in crime prevention and community safety.

He said that during the year, Gauteng had access to 7 271 Vumacam cameras, while the provincial CCTV network grew to a cumulative total of 960 cameras, including 443 new installations.

“Technology has become a powerful tool in building safer communities and improving public services. We will continue investing in connectivity, cybersecurity, digital skills and innovation to create a safer, smarter and more prosperous Gauteng for all,” said Dhlamini.

Leveraging tech

In February this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa committed to leveraging technology and artificial intelligence (AI) as the country adopts smart policing solutions to modernise crime-fighting efforts.

Ramaphosa highlighted the crucial role of AI during his Sona, stressing the need for digital forensics in combatting financial and violent crime and corruption.

“We have seen the value of technology in fighting crime. By using AI in its fraud risk detection and verification work, Sars has prevented the leakage of over R95 billion in impermissible refunds, recovered R20 billion in revenue, and dismantled an illicit tobacco and gold scheme.”

Ndlovu said that as Gauteng advances its digital transformation agenda, it will continue to expand connectivity, improve online government services, strengthen cybersecurity, develop digital skills, and leverage technology to improve the quality of life for residents throughout the province.
