BYU just came up with the most important win for the Big 12 in a few years.

The thrilling 28-24 win over Notre Dame is the potential breakthrough moment for the conference in its newest form. Now, BYU has the one gigantic victory to impress the College Football Playoff committee, and it raises the level of everyone else, including Utah and Texas Tech.

UCF could use a big, splashy win of its own to get the Scott Frost reboot going. The team is okay, and it should be in the mix for a bowl game, but after a blah run since joining the Big 12, this is a moment.

Why BYU Will Win

UCF doesn’t move the ball well enough.

Unless the BYU defense lets down a bit after the Notre Dame game, it should be able to keep the Knights from moving the chains on a consistent basis.

BYU isn’t a time of possession team, but to settle things down on the road, quarterback Bear Bachmeier and the dominant force of an offense on third downs – third in the nation, converting 56% of its tries – should be able to dominate the tempo.

Why UCF Will Win

BYU is a different team away from Provo, and now it’s very, very far from Utah.

The Cougars were fine against Colorado State, but they gave up 23 points to a bad Rams team – two turnovers kept that from being even more of a blowout. They survived TCU in a 17-10 fight, but it wasn’t smooth sailing.

At home, UCF has to get quarterback Keyone Jenkins going right away. He completed 19-of-20 throws in the win over TCU, and he’s sharp enough to hit the midrange throws to at least keep the Cougars from bringing the pressure they did late against the Irish.

BYU vs UCF Prediction, Betting Lines

This is a very, very, very, very, very dangerous moment for BYU.

The Cougars got the big win over the Irish, the Utah game is looming in a few weeks, and UCF is just plucky enough to get off to a hot start and make this a fight.

It’ll take a little bit. Give it about 20 minutes of game action, and BYU will settle in and start to take over. It’s better when it starts running and commits to it, but the UCF defense will hold up just enough to make this a four-quarter fight.
