Inter Milan 1-1 Atalanta – Italian Media Defend Nerazzurri Fury: ‘In The Past, It’s Always Been A Penalty’

Gazzetta dello Sport have backed Inter Milan’s fury over the refereeing decisions in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Atalanta, declaring that Scalvini’s challenge on Frattesi should have resulted in a penalty and that VAR’s silence was unacceptable.

The outlet analysed both disputed incidents in their match review, via FCInterNews.

On the Dumfries contact that preceded Krstovic’s equaliser, Gazzetta were measured.

Indeed, noting a brush of feet and a minor push.

However, they stopped short of condemning the decision not to intervene.

“In the doubt, it is fair to ask why the Inter player falls from a position of absolute advantage, the contact does not seem overwhelming.”

Inter 1-1 Atalanta – Gazzetta Claim Inter Deserved A Penalty

Their verdict on the Frattesi incident was far more damning.

“There is anticipation and a kick received by Frattesi, Scalvini is late, the kick is clear and not measurable. In the past it has always been a penalty.”

The criticism of VAR was equally pointed: “Gariglio silent, not acceptable.”

Indeed, the AIA privately acknowledged Inter’s case.

Therefore, the consensus is building that the Nerazzurri were denied two points that could prove decisive in the Scudetto race.

If rivals Milan beat Lazio on Sunday, meanwhile, the gap at the  top of Serie A will be cut to just five points, with nine games left still to play.

When is Man City vs. Arsenal? Date and time of huge game in Premier League title race

Arsenal are on course to claim their first Premier League title for 22 years.

Mikel Arteta's side have a nine-point lead at the summit with seven games remaining in England's top flight. However, the identity of their closest challengers still brings a considerable measure of anxiety.

On the first two of Arsenal's three consecutive second-place finishes over the past three seasons, Manchester City were champions. The Gunners collapsed from a position of strength in 2022/23 before taking the race to the wire a year later, when City's final-day victory over West Ham edged them over the line.

The most recent of those triumphs marked a record fourth league title in a row, a previously unprecedented feat in English football.

After limping to third last season and a hasty and extensive refit of what was an ageing playing squad, City are a shadow of that team this time around or, at the very least, an entirely different one. Throwing away winning positions three times over the course of back-to-back Premier League draws against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest and West Ham underline how this is probably a season too soon for Pep Guardiola's new-look team.

City retain a game in hand but now simply must win when they host Arsenal in a cruch clash at the Etihad Stadium in April.

When is Man City vs. Arsenal?

Manchester City will host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, April 19.

The match will kick off at 4:30 p.m. BST (11:30 a.m. ET).

Arsenal and City also meet in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, March 22.

Man City and Arsenal Premier League run-ins

City and Arsenal each have five scheduled Premier League fixtures after their match at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal having back-to-back home games after visiting City, who will spend their next two match weeks on the road, looks like an advantageous factor for Arteta's team.

Have Man City and Arsenal played a 'title decider' before?

The most obvious example of City and Arsenal meeting with the Premier League title on the line in their April 2023 meeting at the Etihad Stadium.

The Gunners headed to Manchester with a five-point lead at the top of the table but City had two games in hand and were on a treble charge. A Kevin De Bruyne brace inspired a comprehensive 4-1 win. Guardiola's men wrapped up the title with two games to spare.

Eleven months later, City and Arsenal played out a tense 0-0 draw. That result put Arsenal and City two and three points behind Liverpool respectively with nine games remaining.

But Jurgen Klopp's team fell away down the stretch and City prevailed as the race went to the final day. In the final analysis, a draw instead of a victory at the Etihad was the difference between Arsenal coming second rather than first.

If the title is still up for grabs this time around, this might be the experience that most informs Arteta's approach against his old mentor.
