Would the Los Angeles Chargers dare replace Justin Herbert in the 2027 NFL Draft? It certainly has been a rough start to the season. But here is the Chargers’ seven-round draft, according to the Pro Football Focus mock draft simulator during the team’s bye week.
The Chargers (0-5) are winless in 2026. They’re pretty much out of the playoff picture already. So, the best thing they can do is start jockeying for a better season next year.
Let’s look at what the PFF simulator brought to them.

Round 1, Pick 2: EDGE Colin Simmons, Texas
This guy would immediately change the Chargers’ quarterback pressure profile. They currently rank in the bottom half of the NFL in sacks.
Simmons is terrorizing opposing college offenses, according to NFL.com.
“Simmons is at it again,” Lance Zierlein wrote. “The preeminent quarterback hunter in college football came into 2026 with 21 sacks over his first two seasons and has already put 9.5 sacks on the board through five games this year. He’s a dynamic athlete with electric first-step quickness to create early advantages as a rusher.
“Simmons plays with an excellent pocket radar to locate and corral quarterbacks looking to flee the pocket. There is room for more muscle mass on Simmons’ frame to help him stop the run, but his ability to threaten the pocket earns him his spot on my list.”
Defensive improvement will be a priority for the Chargers in the 2027 NFL Draft. Presumably, they will have a new head coach unless they make a dramatic turnaround from their nightmare start.
Round 2, Pick 33: WR Wyatt Young, Oklahoma State
It’s interesting for the Chargers to go this direction with Ladd McConkey already on the roster. But this would give them incredible versatility and cause nightmares for opposing defenses.
Young is a YAC monster, according to NFL Draft Buzz.
“He uncovers immediately, reads zone like a veteran, and turns short throws into long gains with sudden feet and good contact balance,” NFL Draft Buzz wrote. “The concerns are role and translation. His 195-pound frame invites contact from bigger nickels, and his contested resume is thin because he rarely had to win in traffic against the coverage he saw. The level of competition is the variable, not the tape.
“He is at his best in a spread offense that features a movement slot and lets him attack the middle on option routes and screens. Overall, if the separation and ball skills hold up against SEC- and Big 12-caliber corners this fall, the ranking looks conservative, and for now he projects as a starting slot receiver whose ceiling rides on how the game translates a level up, and the talent says he answers that question.”
Round 3, Pick 67: Edge Clev Lubin, Louisville
After adding Simmons, the Chargers double dip and completely change their defense in two picks. Lubin offers a nice complement and plenty of savvy with five years of college ball under his belt.
He’s not the biggest guy, but can get things done, according to The Ringer.
“He has a shorter, tightly packed frame, very good straight-line speed, and good takeoff burst, and he’s an efficient pass rusher,” Todd McShay wrote. “He does not have Dylan Stewart–level first-step explosiveness, but he gets off the ball well, shaves a tight edge with little wasted motion, and consistently attacks half of the offensive tackle.
“His dip move is effective, and while he lacks elite torso flexibility, he has enough bend to keep advancing through contact. His legs never stop moving.”
Round 4, Pick 100: QB Trinidad Chambliss, Ole Miss
Yes, this is a statement about Herbert. The veteran quarterback has been a mess under offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, who is clearly over his head with the Chargers.
But there’s another part of this pick. It seems very unlikely Chambliss will be available this late. He ranks in the top 10 of Zierlein’s NFL prospects. But if he lasts this long, the Chargers must pounce.
“Chambliss’ measurables fall below the traditional NFL quarterback standards, and he’ll turn 25 prior to next season,” Zierlein wrote. “Both factors could cost him on draft day. But let’s not overlook what he’s done against SEC competition since transferring from Ferris State prior to the 2025 season. He’s adept at maneuvering in the pocket and extending plays. He has a livelier arm than most of the quarterbacks on this list. He takes care of the ball and can move the chains on third down with his legs.
“Chambliss has a similar build and play traits to Russell Wilson, a Super Bowl winner and 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback during his 14-year career.”
And the Chargers would have a Plan B if Herbert remains lost in the McDaniel wilderness.
Round 4, Pick 131: LB Amare Campbell, Tennessee
You don’t often find stud linebackers in Round 4, and Campbell has his limitations, according to NFL Draft Buzz.
“The finishing and the athletic profile are the holdups,” NFL Draft Buzz wrote. “His tackling finish is a real problem with nineteen misses, his cover reps come and go and is more functional than fluid, and his average timed speed limits the range to the perimeter. His take-on strength can be tested by climbing guards, and his production leans on volume rather than splash disruption. He is a downhill producer whose missed tackles and coverage cap the role.”
Round 5, Pick 139: TE Benjamin Brahmer, Penn State
The reach picks begin. Brahmer is 6-foot-7, but he doesn’t play like the frame suggests, according to NFL Draft Buzz.
“The blocking is not dominant … but the technique, angles, and releases are more advanced than the raw power, and he is versatile enough to line up attached or flexed,” NFL Draft Buzz wrote. “The passing-game profile still has gaps: thin after-catch production and ordinary deep tape from a body built for posting up safeties.“
Round 6, Pick 195: CB Rickey Gibson III, Texas A&M
Gibson showed promise in 2025 before an injury cut his season short with Tennessee. And the Aggies are high on him, according to Sports Illustrated.
“I think he can do anything from what I’ve seen in workouts,” Aggies defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill said. “He moves fluidly. He’s a man player, but I think he’ll have no problem playing zone. So far, everything I’ve seen, I’ve been very impressed with him.”
Round 7, Pick 245: G Joe Brunner, Indiana
Throw a dart and hope it sticks. That’s what the Chargers get with Brunner.
He’s 6-foot-5, 317 pounds, and showed good leadership in two years with Wisconsin.
